About Departments

The collection and systematization of data on social systems are essential for informed decision-making, as statistics provides the tools to analyze and interpret socio-economic phenomena such as production, consumption, labour, markets, and financial flows. Building on a long tradition dating back to 1833 and the contributions of prominent Ukrainian scholars, particularly the world-renowned statistician and demographer Professor Mykhailo Ptukha, the Department of Statistics and Demography was reestablished in 2009 within the Faculty of Economics by Professor Viktor Bazylevych, marking a significant milestone in advancing statistical science and education in Ukraine.

The Department was headed by Doctor of Economics, Professor Nataliia Kovtun, during 2009–2016 and 2019–2024. She made a substantial contribution to the establishment and development of the Department. From 2016 to 2019, the position of Acting Head of the Department was held by PhD (Economics), Associate Professor Ihor Honchar, who developed several innovative educational programmes in economic analytics and statistics.

Statistical science at the Department continues to progress through the dedicated research of its faculty. The Department’s scholarly legacy has been greatly enriched by the contributions of leading experts in statistics and demography, including Professor Antonina Yerina, Academician Professor Ella Libanova, and Associate Professor Zinaida Palian. It also includes laureates of the Mykhailo Ptukha Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, such as Corresponding Member Oleksandr Hladun, and Professor Sergiy Gerasymenko, Doctor of Economics, who remains actively engaged in advancing the Department’s academic and research mission.

To enhance professional training and digital competencies among Economics students, particularly in the use of modern information and analytical systems for big data, in 2021 the Department of Statistics and Demography was renamed the Department of Statistics, Information and Analytical Systems, and Demography, and was strengthened with IT experts. The Department focuses on equipping future specialists with the skills necessary to meet contemporary challenges, including the digitalization of socio-economic processes, advanced statistical methodologies, big data processing, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in economic analysis.

Since 2024, Professor Galyna Chornous, Doctor of Economics, has been serving as Head of the Department of Statistics, Information and Analytical Systems, and Demography. Professor Galyna Chornous is an expert in data mining, decision support systems, and analytical information technologies, with extensive experience in international academic programmes, SAP University Alliances, and the development of innovative educational and research initiatives.
