About the Department

MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS – to train highly qualified specialists in the field of international economics who possess modern knowledge and practical skills for analyzing foreign markets and strategically managing the development of international business in a global environment.

 

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Since the department was founded, training has focused on combining in-depth theoretical issues with business practice, applying modern economic approaches and methods of international market analysis, thorough study of the English language, which is the undisputed global standard for international business communications, deepening cooperation with leading domestic and foreign companies, and involving students in scientific and project work. Students master original methods of market environment analysis and optimal management decision-making, which, along with fundamental theoretical training, ensures graduates’ high competitiveness in the national and international labor markets.

The staff of the Department of International Economics, which was later renamed the Department of International Economics and Marketing, has always been distinguished by its high scientific potential. The initial staff of the department consisted of seven academics: Doctors of Economics A. Rumyantsev, V. Rokoch, G. Klymko, Candidates of Economic Sciences V. Shevchenko, V. Savchuk, M. Didkovsky, and T. Nagachevska. Over the next 24 years, the number of teaching staff grew steadily. The first head of the Department of International Economics was a renowned economist in the field of international economics and business, foreign economic activity, Doctor of Economics, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine (since 2007), winner of the Yaroslav the Wise Award of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine (2010), Professor Anatoliy Rumyantsev.

 

 

In 1970, he graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Kyiv University and studied in graduate school from 1970 to 1973. In 1973, he defended his Candidate’s dissertation, “The Use of Scientific and Technological Progress in the Context of International Integration (based on the example of the GDR),” and in 1987, his Doctoral dissertation, “The System of Economic Interests in the Global Economy and the Improvement of the Mechanism for Their Realization.” From 1988 to 1992, he was the head of the Department of Economics at the Institute for Advanced Studies. From 1998 to 2002, he was the head of the Department of International Economics at the Faculty of Economics. From 2002 to 2014, he was a professor in the Department of World Economy and International Economic Relations at the Institute of International Relations of Kyiv University.

He is a member of specialized academic councils for the defense of Candidate and Doctoral dissertations. He served as deputy chair of the expert commission of the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine and is a member of the editorial boards of a number of scientific publications, such as “Bulletin of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Economics,” “Economic Journal,” “Strategy of International Economic Cooperation,” and “Issues of Political Economy.”

He is the author of over 200 works, including 11 individual and collective monographs, over 20 textbooks and teaching aids.

Until 2006, the department employed the renowned scientist, international economist, Doctor of Economics, professor, and academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine (since 1994) Hryhorii Klymko. In 1956, he graduated from the Faculty of International Relations of Kyiv University and was accepted for work at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where he completed his postgraduate studies and defended his candidate’s dissertation (1963) in the specialty “World Economy.” During 1958–1959 and 1961–1962, he worked abroad as part of a group from the USSR Academy of Sciences. He defended his doctoral dissertation in political economy and world economy. In 1970, he was invited to Kyiv University and enrolled in the Faculty of Economics, and from 1980 to 1983, he headed the Department of World Economy and International Relations at the Institute of International Relations.

He is the author of over 500 works, including 15 monographs, 21 textbooks and teaching aids, and 19 brochures, some of which were published abroad.

Since 2002, the department has been headed by economist and professor Alla Starostina. In 1976, she graduated with honors from the Faculty of Economics of Kyiv University, in 1980 she received a candidate degree, and in 1999 – a doctorate in economics. From 1976 to 2002, she worked at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, where she was head of the Department of Industrial Marketing from 1993 to 2002.

In 2013, the Department of International Economics was renamed the Department of International Economics and Marketing. Professor A. Starostina headed the department until its reorganization in 2023. She founded the Ukrainian school of marketing and marketing research and was the first in Ukraine to develop an original methodology for researching national and international markets and analyzing the impact of the changing business environment on the activities of market entities.

A.Starostina is the head of the dual degree program “Business Administration and Consulting / Global Politics and International Relations” between Kyiv University and the University of Macerata (Italy),the  head and participant of international research projects, head of the MBA business school, founder and vice president of the All-Ukrainian public organization “Ukrainian Marketing Association,” founder and board member of the public organization “Association of Marketers of Ukraine.”

Professor A. Starostina is a member of the editorial board of scientific journals: “Bulletin of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Economics,” “Theoretical and Applied Issues of Economics,” “Bulletin of Zaporizhzhia National University. Economic Sciences,“ ”Marketing in Ukraine,“ and ”Competition.” She is the author of 318 scientific, educational, and methodological works, including 13 monographs, 27 textbooks and teaching aids, and 154 articles in professional domestic and leading foreign scientific publications. She has supervised three Doctoral and twenty-three Master’s theses.

The reorganization of the Department of International Economics and Marketing in April 2023 opened a new stage in its development and created conditions for the full realization of the educational, methodological, and scientific potential accumulated under the leadership of A. Starostina in training specialists in the field of international business. The reorganized Department of International Economics brought together eight highly qualified specialists, Candidates of Economic Sciences and Associate Professors, under the leadership of its head, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Volodymyr Virchenko.

Virchenko is a graduate of the Faculty of Economics of Kyiv University, where he studied until 2004 and obtained a Master’s degree in Economics. On October 1, 2004, he was enrolled in a part-time postgraduate program at the Department of Economic Theory. In October 2007, he completed his postgraduate studies ahead of schedule and defended his thesis on “The Formation of the Institutional Structure of the Financial Market in a Transitional Economy.” In June 2019, V. V. Virchenko defended his doctoral dissertation on “The Development of Intellectual Property in the Global Economic Environment.”

In September 2005, he began working as an assistant professor at the Department of Economic Theory (renamed the Department of Economic Theory, Macroeconomics, and Microeconomics in 2014) at Kyiv University, and in June 2010, he became an associate professor in the same department. On April 20, 2023, he was transferred to the position of professor of the Department of International Economics and appointed acting head of the department. In January 2024, he was elected head of the Department of International Economics through a competitive selection process.

Virchenko is a well-known Ukrainian expert in the field of intellectual property economics and behavioral economics. He teaches a number of English-language courses, including “Economics,” “Consumer Behavior,” “Economics of Intellectual Property,” “Behavioral Economics,” “Intellectual Property Policy-Making,”, “Commercialization of Intellectual Property Rights”, and others.

His scientific research is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of current trends in the development of the international intellectual property market, the study of the essence and contribution of intellectual property commercialization to ensuring the global competitiveness of the national economy, and an interdisciplinary analysis of the impact of mental health on the reproduction of human capital and the socio-economic well-being of the population.

Virchenko has published over 140 scientific, educational, and methodological works, including 3 textbooks, 2 co-authored teaching aids, 1 solo monograph, 2 co-authored monographs, 11 teaching and methodological complexes, 6 of which are solo works; 73 articles in scientific professional publications.

Currently, the Department of International Economics consists of 11 scientific and pedagogical staff, including: Head of the Department, Doctor of Economics, Professor V. Virchenko, Doctor of Economics, Assoc. Prof. L. Pashchuk, Candidate of Economics, Assoc. Prof. O. Bulkot, Candidate of Economics, Assoc. Prof. O. Kuzyoma, Candidate of Economics, Assoc. Prof. T. Nagachevska, Candidate of Economics, Assoc. Prof. V. Sereda, Candidate of Economics, Assoc. Prof. I. Sofischenko, Candidate of Economics, Assoc. Prof. V. Shevchenko, Candidate of Economics, Assistant B. Butko, Assistant I. Svyshchuk.

Despite macroeconomic instability, the crisis in the world order, and global challenges caused by Russia’s full-scale military aggression against Ukraine, the Department of International Economics has retained its scientific and pedagogical potential, continues to develop, and looks confidently to the future, making every effort to train a new generation of specialists in the field of international business capable of developing and implementing effective business models and competitive strategies for international enterprises, both in wartime and during the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.
