Research And Scientific Output

The research activities of the department staff are devoted to the study of theoretical, methodological, and applied aspects of the functioning of the international economy in the context of post-industrial transformation and the globalization of economic relations, as well as to monetary and financial instruments of international economic integration. The department’s faculty members participate in the development of modern conceptual approaches to strategic management in international economic activity at various levels of the economic system, mechanisms for Ukraine’s international trade and investment cooperation, and strategies to attract foreign capital to its economy.

The creative efforts of the department’s academic and teaching staff are aimed at solving a wide range of research problems, such as:

  • Ukraine’s international economic activity in the context of the global crisis, the development of integration processes between Ukraine and EU member states, mechanisms of trade, investment, and sectoral cooperation between Ukraine and the EU;
  • monetary and financial aspects of international economic integration;
  • the transformation of the global institutional architecture and Ukraine’s cooperation strategies with international organizations;
  • the role of transnational corporations in the modern international economy;
  • strategic management and economic efficiency of export and import activities of domestic economic entities;
  • mechanisms for increasing the investment attractiveness of the national economy and economic entities;
  • risk management in international business in the context of geopolitical confrontations;
  • mechanisms and implications of international economic sanctions;
  • economic diplomacy in the context of European integration transformations.

 

An important component of the department’s research activities is the participation in research topics such as “Formation of competitive strategies for Ukrainian enterprises in international markets for goods and services” and “Strategies for international cooperation in the context of deepening regional economic cooperation” under the scientific guidance of Professor A. Starostina.

The head of the Department of International Economics, V. Virchenko, leads the research project of the Center for Comprehensive Research on Antimonopoly Policy at the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine, “Research on the peculiarities of compliance with registered intellectual property rights during the consideration of cases of violation of legislation on the protection of economic competition.” During 2020–2021, he served as senior research fellow for the research project “Innovative and entrepreneurial models of modern universities: global trends, main risks, and new opportunities for Ukraine.” and in 2021, he led the research project “Situational analysis of the human rights of persons with psychosocial disorders and the right to mental health of communities during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine.”

The department pays considerable attention to the effective organization of research activities of graduate and undergraduate students, encouraging them to write and publish scientific papers and participate in scientific and practical conferences, forums, round tables, international and national competitions of scientific works, Olympiads, and creative contests. The results of the students’ research work are annually presented at the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Shevchenko Spring,” held at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the Faculty of Economics. Every year, the collection of abstracts based on this conference publishes the scientific achievements of more than 40 students of the “International Economics” educational program.

The department’s lecturers are actively involved in educational, methodological, and public work: Associate Professor O. Bulkot is the editor-in-chief of the journal “Visnyk KNU. Economics,” responsible for industrial practice at the department; Associate Professor O. Kuzyoma is a member of the faculty’s scientific and methodological commission, responsible for the organizational and methodological support of all types of practices at the faculty; Associate Professor T. Nagachevska, a member of the faculty’s scientific and methodological commission, responsible for educational and methodological work at the department; performed the duties of head of the department, deputy head, and has supervised seven first-degree diploma students for all-Ukrainian competitions of scientific works in the field; Associate Professor L Pashchuk – responsible for scientific work and international relations at the department; Associate Professor V. Sereda – member of the faculty’s scientific and methodological commission, responsible for educational plans at the faculty, member of the faculty’s admissions commission secretariat; Associate Professor I. Ya. Sofishchenko is responsible for organizing research internships for master’s students at the department and budgetary research topics; Associate Professor V. Shevchenko was the deputy dean for scientific work, responsible for teaching disciplines in a foreign language at the faculty; he has prepared 10 candidates of sciences.

As a result of joint research work by academic supervisors and students of the International Economics educational program, 14 co-authored articles were published in professional journals indexed in the international scientometric databases Scopus, Web of Science, and Copernicus Index. An unprecedented achievement is the publication of a monograph on the formation of international innovation clusters in Ukraine by Y. Kudryavets, a second-year master’s student of the educational and scientific program “International Economics,” on the recommendation of the faculty’s academic council (advisor T. Nagachevska).

An important component of the department’s scientific activity is the training of Doctors of Science and Doctors of Philosophy in “International Economics.” During 2014–2022, two doctoral and ten PhD dissertations were defended at the department; currently, six doctoral candidates are being trained.

The scientific activity of the department is characterized by high research productivity. Teachers publish monographs, textbooks, teaching aids, and scientific articles in domestic and foreign journals indexed in the international scientometric databases Scopus, Web of Science, and Index Copernicus. Their works highlight current theoretical and practical aspects of the development of international economic relations and international business.

The scientific works of V. Virchenko are devoted to the study of current trends in the development of the international market for intellectual property, the essence and contribution of intellectual property commercialization to ensuring the global competitiveness of the national economy. Virchenko, published within the framework of the latest scientific direction, which was first initiated at Kyiv University by Professor V. Bazilevich.

Virchenko is an expert at the National Research Fund of Ukraine, an associate member of the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and since October 2020, he has been concurrently heading the Interdisciplinary Analytical Center for Social and Economic Well-being and Mental Health at Kyiv University. The results of his scientific research have been tested in the preparation of public policy recommendations for state and local government bodies, namely: the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (2022), the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (2021), the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (2021), the Committee on Youth and Sports of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (2020), the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (2018), and the Department of Economy and Investments of the Kyiv City State Administration (2018).

One of the leading experts in international economics specializing in the study of modern mechanisms and factors of international capital movement, global economic and financial instability, crisis processes exacerbated by the impact of Russian military aggression in Ukraine, monetary and financial aspects of international economic integration, currency market dynamics, problems of international banking development, financial stability of international banks and transnational corporations, mechanisms of modern processes of digitalization of the international economy, is V. Shevchenko, PhD in Economics, Associate Professor.

Issues of entrepreneurial ecosystem development, analysis of international experience in creating startups, modern approaches to international business management, human resource management, research of national and international markets, as well as the activities of international organizations are the subject of scientific works by L. Pashchuk, Doctor of Economics, Associate Professor.

The department pays considerable attention to researching contemporary trends in the development of the international economy, European integration, and Ukraine’s effective entry into the system of international economic relations, topical issues of international technology transfer and international trade, the specifics of international economic development strategies and the implementation of sustainable development principles in the international economic environment, problems of regional economic integration, international capital movements, global competitiveness of Ukraine’s economic sectors and domestic enterprises, international labor migration and the specifics of its state regulation, and assessment of the impact of labor migration on the competitiveness of the national economy. These issues are widely covered in the scientific works of associate professors O. Kuzoma, V. Sereda.

Research into strategies for attracting foreign capital to the Ukrainian economy, methodological approaches to assessing the investment attractiveness of countries, industries, and enterprises, investment factors affecting Ukraine’s competitiveness, trends and forms of international technology transfer, formation of competitive advantages and innovative strategies of domestic companies in international markets, mechanisms for institutional support of Ukraine’s export business, international aspects of the development of telecommunications and the IT sector in Ukraine, methods of economic analysis and evaluation of export-import efficiency, and applied aspects of strategic business planning is actively carried out by the department’s faculty.

The study of issues related to the development of regional economic integration processes, its mechanisms and effects, factors and prospects of European integration of the Ukrainian economy, ways to improve its efficiency, development of investment policy and public administration measures in the field of international capital movement, regulation of international investment activities of economic entities, improvement of instruments for financing foreign trade operations of domestic economic entities.

The problems of the functioning of international financial and investment markets and the activities of transnational corporations in the global economy, in particular the formation and implementation of global and investment strategies of transnational corporations, as well as national investment ecosystems, and the development of a national investment strategy are considered in the works of O. Bulkot, PhD in Economics, Associate Professor.

The department pays significant attention to the effective organization of research work of postgraduates and students, their involvement in writing and publishing scientific papers, participation in scientific and practical conferences, forums, round tables, international and all-Ukrainian competitions of scientific papers, Olympiads, creative competitions. The results of the scientific work of students and postgraduates are annually tested at the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Shevchenko Spring”, which is held on the basis of Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv and the Faculty of Economics. Every year, the collection of abstracts based on the results of the work of the mentioned conference publishes the scientific achievements of more than 40 students of the educational program “International Economics”.

 

 Round table “Prospects for the development of international business in conditions of global instability”, 2024

In 2024, the Department of International Economics held a roundtable on the topic “Prospects for the Development of International Business in Conditions of Global Instability”, which became a platform for discussing current challenges and opportunities in international business. The event brought together representatives of business, public policy, the scientific community and students to search for new business models, market strategies and public policy instruments aimed at increasing business resilience in conditions of global instability.

Also, in 2024, students of the Department of International Economics took part in the conference of students, postgraduates and young scientists “Paradigmatic development of economic science at Shevchenko University”, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Prof. V. Bazylevich. At the sectional meeting of the Department of International Economics, participants presented scientific research highlighting the contribution of Prof. Bazylevich to the development of the economic theory of intellectual property, global trends and modern challenges in this area.

Students of the department have repeatedly won national competitions and contests of student research papers in economics and international economics, international economic relations, foreign economic activity management, international marketing, and current issues of cooperation with the European Union. In particular, between 2015 and 2022, students of the International Economics educational program won 18 prizes in all-Ukrainian competitions of student research papers and 12 prizes in all-Ukrainian student academic competitions in their field.

Students of the International Economics program have also successfully participated in international scientific and creative contests, winning 25 prizes between 2015 and 2021, including the CFA Ethics Challenge, CFA Research Challenge, McKinsey and Kyiv School of Economics case championships, the KSE “BrainChamp” quantitative methods Olympiad, the Genesis Startup Student Contest, PricewaterhouseCoopers tournaments, the Transfer Pricing Contest (KPMG), X-Culture Global Collaboration Project, X-Culture International Business Case Contest, Golden Compass International Marketing and Startup Competition, “Zavtra.ua,” and “Future Ukraine 2030.”

Students and graduate students of the department have been repeatedly awarded: scholarships from the President of Ukraine, prizes from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for young scientists, awards from the Kyiv City State Administration and the Mayor of Kyiv for achievements in the development of the capital, letters of appreciation from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, etc.
