About the Department
The history of the Department of Business Economics dates back to 1944, when the Department of Political Economy was established within the Faculty of Economics. The modern history of the Department is connected with the activities of the Departments of Political Economy of the Natural Sciences Faculties and the Department of Management and Analysis of Enterprise Operations.
In the 1960s, with the expansion of university faculties and the growing number of students, there arose a need to take into greater account the specific features of teaching economic theory across the economic, natural sciences, and humanities faculties. Therefore, based on the formerly unified university-wide Department of Political Economy, in June 1963, by order of the Rector of the Kyiv State University named after Taras Shevchenko, three new Departments of Political Economy were established – for the Faculty of Economics, for the Humanities Faculties, and for the Natural Sciences Faculties.
During the 1970s, the Department of Political Economy of the Natural Sciences Faculties became a leading department for similar divisions at higher educational institutions across Ukraine. It coordinated educational, methodological, research, and mentoring activities in the field of economic education.
Over the years, the Department was headed by talented educators and scholars – prominent organizers of economic science in Ukraine: Prof. Mykola Panchenko, Doctor of Economics (1963–1975) Prof. Mykola Chernenko, Doctor of Economics (1975–1988) Prof. Yurii Nikolenko, Doctor of Economics (1988–1998)
In 1984, the Faculty of Economics of Kyiv State University named after Taras Shevchenko underwent a reorganization of its existing departments, which resulted in the establishment of a new department – “Management and Analysis of Enterprise Operations.”
According to the Rector’s order, in January 1985, Dr. Liudmyla Vorotina, Doctor of Economics and alumna of the Faculty of Economics, was appointed Head of the Department after winning a competitive selection. In the same year, 1985, the department was renamed “Department of Management and Enterprise Economics.” The new department began training specialists in enterprise economics.
On April 6, 1998, as a result of the merger and reorganization of the Departments of Economics of the Natural Sciences Faculties and the Department of Management and Enterprise Economics, a new department – the Department of Theoretical and Applied Economics – was established. Prof. Anatolii Shehda, Doctor of Economics, was appointed as Head of the Department.
In 2012, by decision of the Faculty and University Academic Councils, the department was renamed the Department of Business Economics, which has been headed since 2011 by Prof. Halyna Fyliuk, Doctor of Economics, Honoured Economist of Ukraine.
Today, the Department of Business Economics employs six professors – Prof. Dmytro Baiura, Prof. Olena Grishnova, Prof. Yurii Yekhanurov, Prof. Halyna Fyliuk, Prof. Lesia Chubuk, and Prof. Larysa Shaulska – as well as twelve associate professors (PhD holders) and two assistants (PhD degree holders without academic rank).
