About the Department

The Department has a high reputation in the university and the faculty. The efforts of the Department’s team are focused on training highly qualified specialists capable of:

  • Engaging in entrepreneurial, organizational, managerial, and economic activities in the goods and services market.
  • Working as experts and consultants on issues of economic and mathematical modeling and forecasting.
  • Conducting information and analytical, educational, and research activities in various organizations at a high professional level.
  • Being able to compete in the labor market.

The primary focus of the Department’s work is the development of professional competencies in future specialists, enabling them to enhance and effectively utilize their professional potential, build their careers, achieve optimal results in their profession, and become leaders within organizations..

Future specialists receive a fundamental economic and mathematical education, which ensures:

  • Breadth of vision.
  • Holistic perception of the dynamics of socio-economic changes.
  • Development of innovative abilities, initiative, and entrepreneurship.
  • The ability to perceive and use new ideas and tools of scientific knowledge and practical activity in practice.

A specialist in economic cybernetics is a broad-profile economist in the field of economics, focusing on the preparation and implementation of effective solutions to economic problems using economic and mathematical methods and models, as well as modern information technologies.

The main directions of the Department’s scientific activity are:

  • Construction and use of macroeconomic models of the Ukrainian economy.
  • Development of new methods for forecasting socio-economic processes.
  • Modeling the development of the information society in Ukraine.
  • Modeling Ukraine’s economic security.
  • Construction of theoretical and numerical methods for optimal placement during socio-economic sample surveys.
  • Development of new technological means for support and decision-making.
  • Development of new methods for managing a portfolio of securities.

Graduates of the Economic Cybernetics Department successfully work in various sectors of Ukraine’s national economy.

  • In particular, the Department’s alumni include: I.O. Mityukov (Minister of Finance, Vice Prime Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine), V.T. Piatnytskyi (Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine), M.V. Moklyak (Deputy Head of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine), S.A. Nikolaichuk (Deputy Head of the National Bank of Ukraine), O.M. Khodachuk (Chairman of the Board of Diamant Bank PJSC), and others.

The Department of Economic Cybernetics of the Faculty of Economics carries out educational activities at all levels of higher education in the specialty 051 – «Economics» and C1 – “Economics and International Economic Relations (specialization C1.01. – Economics), namely:

  • Bachelor’s (educational program «Economic Cybernetics»).
  • Master’s (educational program «Economic Cybernetics»).
  • Doctor of Philosophy (educational and scientific program «Economics»).

Currently, 162 full-time students are studying at the Department, including 24 Master’s students.

Since its establishment, the Department has trained over 2,200 specialists in economic cybernetics, including approximately 200 from 11 foreign countries (Algeria, Bulgaria, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, Germany, Poland, Turkmenistan, Hungary, and Uzbekistan).

During the Department’s existence, more than 20 Doctors of Science and over 70 Candidates of Science were trained. Twenty candidates of Science were trained for foreign countries.

Department lecturers teach 34 mandatory disciplines and 26 special courses (9 of which are in English).

The lecturers ensure the teaching of the following disciplines for all specialties of the Faculty of Economics: «Higher Mathematics for Economists», «Higher Mathematics for Economists (Basic Level)», «Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics for Economists», «Econometrics», «Applied Econometrics».

The Department is a leading center of scientific and educational excellence in Ukraine. As of July 2022, the Department team includes 17 lecturers:

  • 7 Doctors of Sciences (1 Associate Professor and 6 Professors), 4 of whom have the academic title «Professor».
  • 10 Candidates of Sciences (7 Associate Professors and 3 Assistants), 6 of whom have the academic title «Associate Professor».

Seven graduates of the Economic Cybernetics Department serve as lecturers. The average age of the Department’s lecturers is 45 years.

The faculty conducts significant work to ensure the proper organization of the educational process in the following main areas:

  • Use of the latest effective teaching methods and techniques.
  • Raising the level of scientific and pedagogical skills of lecturers.
  • Application of progressive student and Master’s knowledge assessment systems, including the modular-rating system.
  • Internship supervision.
  • Consulting and supervision of students’ independent work.

Lecturers have their own developments of lecture and practical materials, and possess the latest methods and techniques for teaching disciplines, which they apply during classes.

All disciplines taught at the Department are provided with educational and methodological complexes.

In many disciplines, computer technologies are used to develop practical solutions for complex situational tasks, business games, and colloquiums, and testing is conducted, utilizing technical means. All lecturers use PowerPoint presentations of lecture material, etc.

The Department continuously improves the quality of the educational process through the teaching of mandatory and student-elective courses using new computer technologies, including:

  • Development of proprietary software (Assoc. Prof. O.V. Komashko).
  • Use of the ONEDRIVE cloud service in the educational process (Assoc. Prof. G.O. Kharlamova).
  • Use of distance learning, etc.

The Department has a modern material and technical base. Thanks to the international Tempus project, the Department of Economic Cybernetics, together with the Department of Management of Innovation and Investment Activities, has a modern computer classroom (10 PCs, server, printer). All equipment is modern and fully meets the educational process’s needs. This has positively affected the effectiveness of classes.

All disciplines are taught using technical teaching aids, and 80% of practical and laboratory sessions are conducted in computer classrooms using modern computers and software such as MS Office, Statistica, SPSS, Powersim, Eviews, M.Project, Project Expert, “FAST”, SAP R/3, R-studio, Peltarion, MathType, SAP BI, SAP ERP, Gretl, Deductor Academic, Power BI, Tableau, 1C: Enterprise (module “E-commerce”), etc.

The material base of the faculty and the Department of Economic Cybernetics is used for conducting classes. Students have access to the Internet from the faculty’s computing center, as well as Wi-Fi on the faculty premises. A database of situational exercises that are solved using application packages has been created.

In 2009, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University became a participant in the international SAP University Alliances program. As part of the SAP University Alliances cooperation program, lecturers of the Department of Economic Cybernetics, H.O. Chornous and O.L. Banna, completed the certification course “SAP TERP10 – Integration of Business Processes” and received international SAP company certificates. In January 2011, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University successfully passed the accreditation for SAP programs and received the honorary status of a Regional SAP Certification Center (the first in Ukraine). Relevant courses on modern information systems are taught to students of the Faculty of Economics.

The Scientific School of Economic and Mathematical Modeling operates at the Department of Economic Cybernetics, headed by Doctor of Economics, Prof. Olena Ihorivna Lyashenko. The scientific school was founded in 1911, when the scientific work «Theory of Marginal Utility» was written and awarded the gold medal of the Imperial University of St. Volodymyr (now Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University). The founder of the scientific school is Yevhen Yevhenovych Slutsky (1880-1948), a world-renowned scientist, author of profound and original works in the fields of economic theory, econometrics, probability theory, and mathematical statistics.

At the current stage of the school’s development, world recognition has been achieved by:

  • Scientific research on ecological and economic modeling (Prof. I.M. Lyashenko).
  • Theory of optimal placement during socio-economic sample surveys (Prof. O.I. Cherniak).
  • Application of Bayesian networks in economics (Prof. O.I. Cherniak).
  • Mathematical modeling of open economy dynamics (Prof. O.I. Lyashenko).
  • Modeling of financial risks (Prof. A.B. Kaminskyi).
